Now that 2017 is well underway, how is it going?  Are you feeling optimistic?  Motivated?  Excited?  Or are you wondering, “How is it possible that I’m still in the exact same place?!”

I believe we are experiencing this life and all of its circumstances for a reason.  We are here to learn.  Our souls have chosen THIS particular human experience.  We have the opportunity to go through this life passively or to learn the lessons we came here to learn.  I also believe that the lessons we choose not to learn this go around will show up for us lifetime after lifetime until we finally get it.

I recently read an interview with Oprah Winfrey in which she said, “I had been thinking, ‘Am I going to die and not figure this out?  Am I going to leave this planet Earth still complaining about not being able to keep weight off?’”

I recognize that feeling.  I also don’t want to waste this beautiful lifetime NOT figuring things out and learning the lessons I’m here to learn.

I guarantee that you know the lesson(s) YOU are here to learn.  They are the things that weigh the most heavily on your heart.  They are the things that have been plaguing you for a long time, the things that either show up over and over or never leave in the first place.  If you are like most people, these are things you suffer in secret.

Maybe it’s something straightforward and measurable like your weight, debt, or addiction.

Maybe it’s less obvious to the outside world like your loneliness, self-hatred, or grudge.

Until we make the decision to learn the lesson once and for all, we will never be free from these burdens.

They are not going anywhere permanently until we choose something else.

Every day that we wake up, we choose.

  • Eating 5,000 calories a day or 1,500 calories a day are both choices.
  • Spending money you don’t have or keeping yourself on a budget are both choices.
  • Looking around at what you lack or at what you are blessed with are both choices.
  • Holding onto anger or opting for forgiveness are both choices.

We either choose to face our potential lessons or we choose to ignore them.  Ignoring them is still a choice though.  And it often comes with a high cost, because it brings with it shame and guilt.

At the very least, I encourage you to do one thing.

Acknowledge the choice you are making.  Stop thinking in terms of something you haven’t done yet; start thinking in terms of what you ARE doing.

And if you are ready to make a different choice, I highly recommend you do what Oprah did and get help.  Wouldn’t you have already taken care of this if you were able to do it alone?
